  Child & Adolescent Road Safety(CARS) Campaign  
 

Objectives of the WebQuest:

This WebQuest focuses on the language use in a meaningful context. This context is adopted from a English textbook in Hong Kong (MyPals are Here! - Unit 10 Road Safety). In that unit, students read about road safety and learn to make a poster about road safety. After learning this unit, students apply their knowledge and skills in this “Child & Adolescent Road Safety (CARS) Campaign” to consolidate their learning of the unit.

Skills involved in the “Child & Adolescent Road Safety (CARS) Campaign” WebQuest:

l  Listening Skills: Extract relevant information from an announcement (news report)

l  Speaking Skills: Present information clearly and coherently

l  Reading: Skim a text to obtain the main ideas

l  Writing: Use the appropriate format, conventions and language features when creating a poster and a questionnaire

Tasks design of the WebQuest:

There are three tasks in this WebQuest. These three tasks scaffold students’ knowledge with 3 stages (Preparation Stage, Process Stage and Product Stage).

Brainstorming and sharing personal experience

l  Relate the context to their previous learning and personal experience

Process

Conducting a research and finding information

l  Collect information through  conducting a research to people involved (drivers and pedestrians)

l  Collect information from different web resources

l  Reading: Skim a text to obtain the main ideas

l  Writing: Use the appropriate format, conventions and language features when creating a questionnaire

Product

Planning the “Child & Adolescent Road Safety” (CARS) Campaign

l  Organize the information  as a proposal

l  Present the information they collected in a poster and a presentation video

l  Speaking: Present information clearly and coherently

l  Writing: Use the appropriate format, conventions and language features when creating a poster

Grouping:

Students need to form groups of 4. To enhance the effectiveness among the group, teachers could help to arrange the grouping according to students’ English proficiency.

Member 1: Students with high English proficiency

Member 2: Students with medium English proficiency

Member 3: Students with medium English proficiency

Member 4: Students with low English proficiency

Resources:

There are a lot of resources being used in this WebQuest to equip students with the knowledge about road safety. Students could find out the resources from the Resources Page. Teachers could help to short list the resources resource for less able students. The 1st item in each category is the most effective one.
